Police in Rhineland-Palatinate are investigating after a passer-by discovered a substantial cache of firearms and ammunition in woodland beside the L 528 road near Speyer, opposite Natostraße, the Rhine-Palatinate police headquarters (Polizeipräsidium Rheinpfalz) said on 15 September 2026.
The find included an AK-47-type rifle, a submachine gun, shotguns, hunting rifles, several handguns, a flare gun and several thousand rounds of ammunition for pistols, rifles and shotguns. The pedestrian who found the weapons alerted police, who secured the site.
Investigators say it is not yet clear how long the weapons had been there, who owned them, or whether they are linked to any criminal activity. Police in Ludwigshafen are appealing for anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the parking area along the L 528 to come forward.
