Police in the eastern Netherlands arrested two men after a scheme in which fraudsters posed as buyers of Rolex watches on the classifieds site Marktplaats and paid with counterfeit tokens designed to resemble EURC, a legitimate euro-pegged cryptocurrency, Politie Oost-Nederland said.
According to police, victims who sold watches in August 2025 initially believed they had been paid in full, since the fake tokens appeared identical to real EURC at the time of the transaction; the tokens later proved worthless when victims tried to convert them to euros. A 24-year-old man from Geleen was arrested on September 9, 2026, and remanded in custody for 14 days after police also found firearms and drugs during a search of his premises; a 45-year-old man from Leiden was questioned and released but remains a suspect.
